The Story of the Blocks, or How a Certain Lady was Sucked into Blogs

Once upon a time there was a 49 year old lady who started having major problems once a month.  A call was made to the Dr. office - "That can be normal at your age, but if it becomes your new normal every month, you should have it checked out".  Things got worse each month, until 4 months later.  The lady almost passed out in the airport bathroom upon arrival in Mexico for a mission trip the week of her 50th  birthday.  So, this lady pursued a diagnosis, knowing she had fibroids and that could be causing the problem.  At her ultrasound, the Dr. who came in to see the results said 'the fibroids wouldn't cause that', but I see a couple of polyps, and one is kind of large.  They need to be removed.

So, the lady went to an expert lady Dr. for the first time ever.  This youngun recommended that the lady have the polyps removed, a D&C, and an IUD inserted to prevent growth of more of the same.  Imagine the lady's shock a week later on Friday afternoon when she receives a call from the lovely young Dr. telling her that they found cancer cells in the polyp that was removed.  Time to go to an Oncologist.

It is a wonderful thing that this lady believes in Jesus, and prayer.  

She tracked down her best friend at church, and went there on her way home.

Lovely Kay tells her that God gave her a verse for the lady to believe in and cling to.  

Psalm 128:6 "and may you live to see your children's children".  

Kay said it was a promise, and that was such a comfort, since this 50 year old lady has young children she is raising on her own - 10 and 13. 

10 days later, the lady meets with the special oncologist and finds out that the cancer cells found are precursers to a very rare type of cancer that goes outside of the uterus and can attack many areas inside the abdomen.  

The lady is afraid, but still clinging to her promise from God.

Surgery was horrible and difficult, but it was done robotically through small incisions.  The lady goes home the next day.  The lady is very weak and heals slowly, but grateful she is alive and home during the summer with her children.  A few days later, the lady finds out that they found no further cancer cells in any of the organs and tissue that had been removed.  It is a miracle!  This type of cancer is often not caught in time and the prognosis is usually dire.

After a few weeks of recovery, the lady is bored but still not able to work, and can't concentrate long enough on a book to do much reading.  So she goes on the computer, and finds a new world out there - the world of quilting blogs.  The lady loves all she is seeing, and she finds one particular blog by Rachel Griffith called P.S. I Quilt that has a tutorial to make a pinwheel sampler.  

The lady makes one or two blocks a day, using some muslin she has had 25 years and some strips of reproduction 30's fabrics she bought on the shop hop bus trip the year before.  

All the while praising God.

Sorry for such a long post, but I have been wanting to share my experience last year.  Making these blocks was very cathartic.  I hope to start putting them into a quilt this summer 

one year after my surgery.
